Pawn wants to be the first in her family to graduate college. She faces unexpected twists and turns, and has to navigate various obstacles in order to receive her degree. It feels as if college is one big game she has to beat to graduate – but she still works to break the cycle. This multimedia, one-woman, HipHop theatre piece uses movement, music, sound design, poetry, and original interviews to bring to life a snapshot of the first generation college student’s experience. “Break The Cycle” creatively brings to light the unique challenges that many low income and first generation students face in college. The show is designed to inspire dialogue around how to better support first gen students on their pathway to success. The show is followed by a more intimate post-show talkback with Kelsey Van Ert, creator, writer, producer, and star of the show, in the second afternoon session. Sponsored by the FirstGen Advisory Board.
