In the Blood

In the Blood by Suzan-Lori Parks is a modern riff on the Scarlet Letter that follows the life of a Black homeless mother (Hester) raising five children — Jabber, Bully, Trouble, Beauty, and Baby. Each character is played by an adult actor who simultaneously plays another person in Hester’s life; her ex-boyfriend, social worker, doctor, best friend, and reverend. Laced in gritty poetry, childish laughter, and gripping despair, In the Blood is a new tragedy for our modern age.”
