Sharing Stories and Countering “White Spaces:” How to “claim Williams” without Institutional Power

How do minoritized individuals and groups “claim” space in the many predominantly white spaces on campus? What does it mean – and what does it look like – to challenge the norms of a “white space.” While grateful for communities of shared identities across campus, there are many settings in which minoritized folks find themselves in predominantly white spaces. This fall, members of the cross country team organized a team POC story-time event and modeled what it means to claim that (predominantly white) space. This session both shares the story of putting together that event and holds space for conversation about what it means to “claim Williams” while lacking institutional power. Open to all!
