You may be familiar with the famed Hopkins occupation of 1969, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, but the history of student activism at Williams extends beyond the Hopkins occupation. In this mini-tour of Paresky, we will be talking about instances of organized student activism that have left their mark on the institution. We will discuss the histories of moments of activism (including the Hopkins occupation, the Jenness occupation in 1988, and others). We’ll explore the role that activism has played in shaping the college over the past 50 years and the legacies that past work leaves for activists today. And we’ll encourage participants to share stories of their own encounters with activism at Williams.
11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Paresky 112. Sponsored by the Williams Public Humanities Fellows
