Reckoning with Enslavement and Colonialism in the Founding Documents of Williams

The “fast facts” on the Williams website inform us that Williams was “established in 1793 with funds bequeathed by Colonel Ephraim Williams.” In this community forum we will examine documents key to the establishment of the College, especially as they relate to the history of enslavement and settler colonialism in Massachusetts. Participants will critically examine Ephraim Williams’s will, a petition from the trustees of Eph’s estate to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and other documents pertaining to the transfer of wealth from indigenous people to the College via the colonial State.
